Kyiv is defending Kostiantynivka from Russian drone attacks. The embattled city is a gateway to Ukraine’s last major defense in the Donetsk region. The New York Times reports that in the middle of the night, a Ukrainian infantryman was in agony in a tree line, suffering from severe injuries to his legs, shoulder, and lung. Despite his unit’s efforts to radio for help, they were unable to send anyone to evacuate him due to the dangerous conditions on the road to their base in Kostiantynivka. The area had become a target for Russian drones, making it too risky for any rescue mission.
In a desperate attempt to save him, the brigade suggested using a small, robot-like tracked vehicle that could be remotely operated from a safe distance and would be less visible to the drones than an armored carrier. The injured soldier, Oleh Chausov, managed to drag himself onto the vehicle, but within 20 minutes, it hit a mine and exploded. Miraculously, Chausov survived and crawled out of the wreckage, seeking shelter in a nearby trench.
However, he was back to square one, still trapped on the battlefield. The article also includes images of the damaged train station in Kostiantynivka and Ukrainian soldiers working on a ground drone similar to the one used to evacuate Chausov. The situation highlights the dangers and challenges faced by Ukrainian soldiers as they continue to fight against Russian-backed separatists in the ongoing conflict.
