Thousands of Venezuelan migrants are doing just what U.S. leaders want them to. But to get home, they face as many dangers as on the journey north. The New York Times reports that a group of around 40 people climbed onto a boat on Panama’s Caribbean Coast. They were not defying the U.S. government by moving towards the border, but rather heading back to Venezuela. This is exactly what American officials want them to do, despite the dangers they face such as robbery, kidnapping, and a dangerous crossing.
Junior Sulbarán, who had fled Venezuela the year before with his infant daughter, described it as a “broken dream.” He and his family had traveled thousands of miles north and through the treacherous jungle pass known as the Darién Gap before arriving in Mexico City before President Trump’s second term. However, they soon heard the administration’s message that those who enter America illegally will be hunted down.
Sulbarán, now 26, is with his wife, Josliacner Andrade, 18, and their daughter, Samantha Victoria, 1. They, along with the other migrants, are waiting at a boat dock that now also serves as a shelter. Despite the warnings from the U.S. government, they are determined to continue their journey back to Venezuela.
