Trump and Putin Discuss Ukraine War in High-Stakes Call

A telephone call between the two leaders was the latest chapter in a flurry of diplomatic maneuvering over ending the three-year conflict.According to The New York Times, the latest development in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the three-year conflict in Ukraine was a telephone call between the two leaders, President Vladimir V. Putin and President Trump. The call, which lasted for two hours, did not result in any breakthroughs, with Putin stating that he was willing to negotiate a peace deal with Ukraine but only if certain concessions were made to Russia.

During the call, Putin informed Trump that Russia was prepared to work with Ukraine on a memorandum for a potential peace agreement. He described the conversation, the third between the two leaders since Trump’s return to the White House in January, as “meaningful and frank.” However, Putin made it clear that he was not willing to agree to an immediate cease-fire without receiving concessions from Ukraine. He reiterated his stance that a peace deal must address the root causes of the crisis, which includes Russia’s demand for significant influence over Ukraine.

After Putin’s statement, Trump took to social media to offer a more optimistic view of the call, stating that it “went very well” and that negotiations for a cease-fire and an end to the war would begin immediately between Russia and Ukraine.

Putin mentioned that his team may release more details about the call later in the day. He spoke to reporters at a center for gifted children in Sochi, Russia, where he was visiting and where the call with Trump took place.
