They Escaped War in Ukraine. It Found Them in Israel.

A family of five Ukrainians was killed by an Iranian missile strike in Israel, in a tragic intersection of two wars. The New York Times reports that a family of five Ukrainians tragically lost their lives in Israel due to an Iranian missile strike. This unfortunate event highlights the intersection of two ongoing wars – the conflict in Ukraine and the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

For this particular Ukrainian family, Israel was seen as a safe haven from the war in their home country. Mariia Pieshkurova, the mother of the family, had brought her 7-year-old daughter, Anastasiia, to Israel for life-saving treatment for her advanced leukemia. The country also provided refuge for Anastasiia’s young cousins, Kostiantyn and Illia, who were seeking shelter from the constant attacks by Russian drones and missiles in Ukraine.

The family had settled in Bat Yam, a suburb of Tel Aviv, but unfortunately, war caught up with them. On June 15, an Iranian missile strike hit their residential building, killing all five family members. This tragic news has caused shock and grief in Ukraine, as the deaths of this family serve as a reminder of the human toll of these ongoing conflicts.

The deaths of this family also highlight the irony of seeking safety in a country that is also embroiled in war. Israel, known for its powerful air defense system, was unable to protect this family from the attack. This is a stark contrast to Ukraine, which has long envied Israel’s advanced defense capabilities.

Anastasiia’s father and Mariia’s ex-partner, Artem Buryk, expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the loss of his daughter and her family. He never imagined that they would go to Israel to escape war, only to find it there.

This tragic event serves as a reminder that war knows no boundaries and can affect anyone, regardless of where they seek refuge. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
