In the latest sign of a warming relationship, President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Berlin with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said Germany would increase funding for arms production and supplies.According to The New York Times, the relationship between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chancellor Friedrich Merz appears to be warming as they met in Berlin on Wednesday. During a joint news conference, Merz announced that Germany would increase its support for Ukraine by providing more funding for the production of weapons, including long-range ones, and sending more military equipment to Kyiv.
This announcement comes at a time when the United States is stepping back from the conflict and Europe is being forced to take on a larger role. Merz did not provide specific details but stated that Germany would also assist in the domestic production of weapons and increase shipments of military equipment.
The German Defense Ministry later revealed that the aid package was worth approximately 5 billion euros, or $5.7 billion, and included cooperation in weapons construction, air-defense systems, hand-held and other weapons, and financing of satellite communications.
Zelensky’s visit to Berlin was aimed at securing more assistance from Europe’s industrial powerhouse. This was his third meeting with Merz since he took office this month. The timing of the visit is crucial as both Russia and Ukraine are rapidly expanding their arsenals in preparation for a fourth summer of war.
The meetings between Merz and Zelensky highlight the chancellor’s efforts to reestablish German leadership among European allies, especially in light of the weakening U.S. commitments to NATO. It also emphasizes the important role that Germany will play in sustaining the Ukrainian war effort.
