Israel has been conducting near-daily strikes against what it says are Hezbollah targets as the Iranian-backed group comes under pressure to disarm amid fears of a renewed war.The New York Times reports that Israel has been conducting frequent strikes against what it claims are Hezbollah targets, as the Iranian-backed group faces pressure to disarm and avoid another war. On Wednesday, Israel announced its first ground incursions into southern Lebanon in months, with the aim of weakening Hezbollah further. The Israeli military stated that these “targeted operations” destroyed Hezbollah infrastructure, but did not specify when they took place. Footage released by the military showed soldiers conducting nighttime operations inside Lebanese territory.
The frequency of Israeli strikes has increased in recent weeks, raising concerns that the fragile cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been in place since November, may not hold. Despite being battered by last year’s war with Israel, Hezbollah has not responded militarily to any of the attacks since the truce was agreed upon.
The United States and Israel have been pressuring Hezbollah to give up its weapons, a key requirement of the cease-fire that ended the deadliest conflict in decades. The war began when Hezbollah attacked Israel in solidarity with its Palestinian ally, Hamas, which is also backed by Iran. Israel then launched a war against Hamas in response to their October 2023 attack that killed approximately 1,200 people.
