How Europe Got Tough on Migration

The European Union has not gone as far as President Trump in cracking down on immigration, but its shift is already profound.According to The New York Times, the European Union has not taken as extreme measures as President Trump in cracking down on immigration, but there has been a significant shift in their approach. Nicola Procaccini, a member of the European Parliament, recalls being shunned by his colleagues for his party’s hard-line stance on immigration. However, now mainstream politicians are embracing similar policies, signaling a change in attitudes towards undocumented migrants.

Procaccini’s party, Brothers of Italy, has gained popularity in Italy and its leader, Giorgia Meloni, is now the country’s prime minister. Procaccini himself is a chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists group, a major force in the European Parliament. This shift towards a tougher stance on immigration is not limited to one political party, as leaders from both the right and left are pushing for stricter policies.

In countries across the European Union, there is a growing trend of rolling back protections for undocumented migrants in order to make it easier to deport them. Denmark’s “zero” refugee policy has become a model for other leaders to follow. The European Union is also working on new rules that would allow for the deportation of asylum seekers to third countries. Additionally, the bloc has recently struck a deal to deploy agents in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a non-EU member, to better police borders.

While this shift in attitudes towards immigration has not caused the same level of turmoil as President Trump’s policies in the United States, it is still seen as a significant and entrenched change. As the European Union continues to grapple with the issue of immigration, it remains to be seen how these policies will affect the region in the long term.
