Druse in Syrian Town Rocked by Violence Agree to Disarm Militias

After this week’s bloodshed, Druse leaders in Ashrafieh Sahnaya agreed to integrate militia fighters into government forces. But some residents remain wary.According to The New York Times, a truck filled with armed men and blaring sirens caught the attention of residents in the Syrian town of Ashrafieh Sahnaya on Friday morning. This vehicle, resembling a shark, was impossible to miss as it trailed behind the sirens. The town had been turned into a sectarian battlefield for two days, with dozens of casualties, exposing the new Syrian leaders’ weak hold on security. Government representatives arrived to assure the town of peace, but their promises were met with skepticism.

In a religious meeting hall, two officials in suits sat next to white-bearded leaders of the Druse religious minority, wearing traditional red-topped white hats. They spoke of unity, with the area’s top official, Jameel Mudawwar, stating, “We’re all in one ship. If it sinks, God forbid, we’ll all sink.” While these words were not new, this time they were accompanied by action.

The main Druse militias in Syria, who control a strategic area near Israel, have been hesitant to join the national military under the new Islamist government, fearing for the safety of their people. However, as the violence escalated this week, local Druse leaders in Ashrafieh Sahnaya made a different decision. In exchange for government concessions, including a promise to investigate any abuses committed during the clashes, they agreed to surrender their weapons and integrate some fighters into the government’s forces.
