After Decades of Hostility, Israeli-Syrian Relations Begin to Thaw

The longtime enemies have opened contacts, reflecting a power shift across a Middle East in which they have newfound common ground: antipathy for Iran. The New York Times reports that after decades of hostility, Syria and Israel have opened diplomatic channels and engaged in indirect discussions, reflecting a shift in power across the Middle East. The new Syrian president, Ahmed al-Shara, has taken a different approach towards Israel, using diplomatic means to resolve border issues. These talks, mediated by the United States, are the most serious between the two countries in over a decade and signify a departure from the former government’s animosity towards Israel. This change in attitude is due to a shared antipathy towards Iran, a former ally of the deposed Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad. Both Syria and Israel have security concerns about Iran-backed proxy groups and have found an ally in President Trump. The United States has helped broker these discussions and has called for a nonaggression pact between the two countries.
