In his speech, Vance urged European leaders to end their opposition to anti-immigration parties like AfD, which has been classified as extremist by German intelligence. He argued that these parties are a legitimate expression of voter anger over high levels of migration in the past decade. This stance aligns with Russia’s strategic objective to destabilize Western democracies and support for Ukraine.
Notably, Vance did not mention Ukraine in his speech, despite the high tension in Europe over President Trump’s approach to ending the war. This was highlighted by an explosion at the former nuclear plant at Chernobyl on Friday, which served as a reminder of the ongoing dangers of the conflict.
Before his speech, Vance also met with European leaders who have expressed concerns about Trump’s confrontational attitude towards trans-Atlantic allies and his demand for increased defense spending.
