He also paused before a memorial wall with the words “Never Again” written in multiple languages, including German and English. In a statement to reporters, Vance expressed his deep understanding of the Holocaust, stating that his visit to Dachau, where over 30,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis, solidified the unspeakable evil of the event.
However, after Vance’s speech in Munich the following day, German leaders questioned whether he truly comprehended the gravity of what he had witnessed. As the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau approaches, top German officials have accused Vance and, by extension, President Trump, of supporting a political party that many Germans view as dangerously aligned with Nazi ideology.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD), currently polling at 20% for the upcoming parliamentary elections, has been deemed extremist by German intelligence agencies. The party has faced criticism for downplaying Hitler’s atrocities and some members have been arrested for plotting to overthrow the government. Reports have also surfaced of AfD members attending a gathering where the deportation of not only asylum seekers, but also German citizens who immigrated to the country, was discussed.
Despite its popularity, no other German party is willing to form a coalition with the AfD due to its controversial views. As the country grapples with the rise of right-wing extremism, Vance and Musk’s challenge to traditional approaches has sparked debate and raised concerns about the potential consequences of their actions.
