Ukraine Says It Assassinated Russian General Igor Kirillov in Moscow Bombing

A Ukrainian official said Kyiv was responsible for the assassination in Moscow of Gen. Igor Kirillov, the chief of Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defense forces.According to The New York Times, a Ukrainian official has claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Igor Kirillov, the chief of Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defense forces, in Moscow. The general, who was in charge of Russia’s nuclear and chemical weapons protection forces, was killed by a bomb on a Moscow street on Tuesday, in what is being described as one of the most brazen assassinations since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

The Russian Investigative Committee, a law enforcement agency, stated that the explosive device was planted in a scooter and detonated near the entryway of a residential building, killing General Kirillov and his aide. An official from Ukraine’s security service, known as the S.B.U., confirmed the details of the assassination and stated that Ukraine considered General Kirillov a legitimate target. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also revealed that the S.B.U. had accused the general of criminal activity just one day before his death.

According to the S.B.U., General Kirillov was responsible for the “massive use of banned chemical weapons” in Ukraine. The security service also claimed that Russian troops had dropped ammunition with toxic compounds onto Ukrainian positions in an attempt to force them out of their trenches. The Russian military has stated that the division led by General Kirillov is responsible for tasks such as protecting Russian troops during the use of chemical and nuclear weapons, as well as carrying out offensive operations with incendiary weapons.

The assassination of General Kirillov has raised tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as both countries continue to be at odds since the invasion of Crimea in 2014. The New York Times reports that this assassination is just one of many recent incidents that have escalated the conflict between the two nations.
