U.S.-Russia Talks in Saudi Arabia Set to Go Beyond Ukraine

The two sides met in Saudi Arabia for their most extensive discussions in years. In addition to Ukraine, business ties were on the table. The New York Times reports that the United States and Russia have taken steps towards resetting their relationship on Tuesday. In a meeting between senior officials from both countries, they agreed to work together on ending the Ukraine war, financial investment, and re-establishing normal relations. This meeting was a significant display of friendliness after three years of American efforts to isolate Moscow for its 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

After more than four hours of talks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that both sides had agreed to work towards a peace settlement for Ukraine and explore opportunities for partnership in geopolitics and economics. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov stated that the American side had started to better understand their positions.

This meeting, the most extensive negotiations in over three years between the two global powers, is a departure from the Trump administration’s approach of punishing Russia for starting Europe’s most destructive war in generations. It signals President Trump’s intention to roll back the Biden administration’s strategy of sanctions, isolation, and sending weapons to Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers.

During the press conference after the meeting, American officials did not focus on Russia’s violation of international law, alleged war crimes, or the devastation caused by Russian shelling and bombardment in parts of Ukraine. Instead, they praised President Trump for attempting to stop the fighting by engaging in dialogue with Russia, something his predecessor did not do.

Senator Rubio stated, “For three years, no one else has been able to bring something together like what we saw today, because Donald Trump is the only leader in the world that can.”
