After Donald Trump suggested he might take over Greenland by force, the consensus among the island’s population appears to be bewilderment and anxiety.According to a report from The New York Times, the origins of the current debate over the United States buying Greenland can be traced back to 2019, during Donald J. Trump’s first term as president. At the time, Mr. Trump suggested the idea of purchasing the island, which is controlled by Denmark, but most people in Greenland and Denmark dismissed it as a joke.
However, as the debate has resurfaced in recent weeks, Greenlanders are now questioning whether Mr. Trump’s proposal is serious or just another one of his bombastic statements. Despite Denmark’s insistence that Greenland is not for sale and its future should be determined by the local population, Mr. Trump has doubled down on his belief that the United States needs to annex the island for national security reasons.
In late December, Mr. Trump even announced his choice for ambassador to Denmark with a social media post stating, “For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
While Denmark and Greenland continue to reject the idea of a sale, Mr. Trump’s comments suggest that he is serious about acquiring the island. However, it remains to be seen if this proposal will come to fruition.
