Trump’s Blueprint for Bending the Media Has Nixon Written All Over It

The president’s heavy-handed approach to traditional journalists has the hallmarks of an attempted crackdown 50 years ago.The New York Times reports that the current president’s recent actions towards traditional journalists bear a striking resemblance to those of former President Richard Nixon’s attempted press crackdown 50 years ago. Despite being re-elected for a second term, the president and his administration have shown a clear disdain for the media, labeling them as “arrogant elitists” and threatening to revoke the licenses of local TV stations that carry major networks’ newscasts. They have also attempted to cut funding for PBS, which they deem as “liberal-slanted.”

While these tactics may have initially intimidated journalists, they have ultimately backfired as more and more revelations about the president’s involvement in covering up wrongdoing in his administration have come to light. This has led to a resurgence of the dark chapter in media history, as the current administration continues to use heavy-handed tactics against traditional journalists.

In addition to the familiar attacks on the media, the current president has also taken more extreme measures, such as falsely accusing reporters of accepting government payoffs and reducing their access to White House and Pentagon briefings in favor of right-wing alternatives. These actions go beyond mere symbolism and show a clear attempt to use the power of the government against traditional journalists.

It is important to note that these actions are not coming from President Donald J. Trump, but rather from his predecessor, Richard M. Nixon. However, the similarities between the two administrations’ approaches to the media are striking and raise concerns about the state of press freedom in the country.
