However, this action was not universally praised on the political left. Some self-identified socialists and other leftists expressed concern that Sharpton’s support for the company could undermine the efforts of unionized workers who were planning to strike on February 1st.
Bhaskar Sunkara, the president of the progressive magazine The Nation, criticized Sharpton’s actions on the platform X, saying, “Al Sharpton making Costco into a titan of progress that needs mass support days before a potential strike.” This incident at Costco highlights a tension on the left that is often overlooked, especially in the current political climate where diversity initiatives are being targeted by the Trump administration. Some on the left view these programs with skepticism, seeing them as a distraction from addressing economic inequality and even as an obstacle to doing so.
Sunkara expressed his relief that these issues are not at the forefront of the conversation, stating, “I am definitely happy this stuff is buried for now. I hope it doesn’t come back.” Diversity initiatives in corporations can take various forms, such as Starbucks’ commitment to fair and inclusive hiring practices, achieving gender and race pay equity, and offering anti-bias training.
