Trump Wields U.S. Power With Unclear Economic Consequences

The president sees the U.S. economy as a powerful lever against other countries but there are risks to that approach.According to The New York Times, President Trump is using the strength of the U.S. economy as a weapon, threatening to impose tariffs on over a trillion dollars of trade with multiple countries. This high-stakes confrontation has been ongoing since the weekend, with Mr. Trump demanding that Canada, Mexico, and China comply with his demands.

One of Mr. Trump’s major domestic policy issues is stopping the flow of migrants at the border, and he is also pushing for these countries to stop the shipment of drugs and improve trade relationships with the United States. On Monday, Mr. Trump agreed to delay tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a month, after Mexico promised to reinforce their border with 10,000 National Guard members and Canada made commitments to combat organized crime and list cartels as terrorists.

However, China has not received any reprieve and Mr. Trump has stated that the 10 percent tariffs set to go into effect on Tuesday are just the beginning. He also made it clear that he will use tariffs as a tool to pressure other governments into giving him what he wants, essentially using America’s economic strength to bully other nations.
