Trump to Impose 25% Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum

The president said he planned sweeping tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday and would take other action to even out tariff rates with the rest of the world later this week.According to The New York Times, President Trump announced on Sunday that he would be implementing a 25 percent tariff on all foreign steel and aluminum imports into the United States, starting on Monday. He also stated that he would soon be announcing reciprocal tariffs on America’s trading partners.

During his trip to the Super Bowl on Air Force One, the president stated that these tariffs would apply to all countries, including Canada and Mexico, which are America’s allies and largest trading partners. He clarified that the 25 percent tariff would apply to both steel and aluminum imports.

This decision by President Trump to tax foreign metals and impose reciprocal tariffs follows several other trade threats he has made since taking office. He has already imposed a 10 percent tariff on all products from China and came close to imposing sweeping tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which would have been the highest in decades.

In addition, the president has also mentioned his plans to impose tariffs on Europe, Taiwan, and other governments, as well as on critical industries such as copper, steel, aluminum, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.
