Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Immigration, Drugs and Greenland

The president is increasingly threatening other countries with tariffs for issues that have little to do with trade. In his first week in office, President Trump attempted to pressure governments around the world into stopping the flow of drugs into America, accepting deported migrants, ending wars, and giving up territory to the United States. He used a common threat to achieve his goals: countries that did not comply would face high tariffs on their products sold to American consumers. While tariffs have been used by previous presidents to address trade issues, Trump is now using them frequently to gain leverage on non-trade related issues. This strategy is unprecedented and has been seen almost daily, with Trump threatening countries like Mexico, Canada, China, Denmark, and Russia with tariffs if they do not meet his demands. According to Rachel Ziemba, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, this approach is meant to send a message to other countries that they should comply with the United States’ border concerns. Last week, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China if they did not do more to stop the flow of drugs and migrants into the US. He also threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark if they did not give up Greenland and on Russia if they did not end their war in Ukraine.
