Trump Officials Blame Mistake for Setting Off Confrontation With Harvard

An official on the administration’s antisemitism task force told the university that a letter of demands had been sent without authorization. The Trump administration sent an email to Harvard University last Friday, outlining a set of demands regarding hiring, admissions, and curriculum. These demands were deemed so burdensome by school officials that they felt compelled to take on the White House. The university announced its decision on Monday, sparking a heated battle between one of the nation’s most prestigious universities and the U.S. president. However, shortly after the announcement, a Trump official contacted Harvard, stating that the April 11 letter from the White House’s task force on antisemitism was “unauthorized.” The letter, which was sent by Sean Keveney, the acting general counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services and a member of the task force, was authentic but there were conflicting accounts within the administration about how it was handled. Some believed it was sent prematurely, while others thought it was only meant to be circulated among task force members. Despite the ongoing dialogue between Harvard and the task force, the extreme demands outlined in the letter ultimately led the university to believe that a resolution with President Trump was not possible.
