Trump Administration Considers Large Chip Sale to Emirati A.I. Firm G42

The firm, which the U.S. government scrutinized for its ties to China, is angling for hundreds of thousands of advanced artificial intelligence chips in a deal that could be finalized this week. The New York Times reports that a deal between the Trump administration and G42, an Emirati A.I. firm with ties to China, is in the works to send hundreds of thousands of advanced artificial intelligence chips to the company. The negotiations, which are ongoing, have caused tension within the administration as some officials are eager to close the deal before President Trump’s visit to the Persian Gulf states this week. This approach marks a shift in U.S. tech policy, as the Biden administration had previously rejected similar A.I. chip sales over concerns of giving autocratic governments an edge in developing cutting-edge A.I. models. The deal would give G42 access to chips with limited oversight, with some going to a partnership with U.S. firm OpenAI and others directly to G42. Additionally, a separate deal is expected to be announced with Saudi Arabia, giving their government and new A.I. company, Humain, access to tens of thousands of semiconductors and technology support from Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. The U.S. began requiring a license for A.I. chip purchases during the Biden administration due to their potential use in military and surveillance technologies.
