TikTok Starts Working Again After Trump Says He Will Stall a Ban

Some users saw the social media app come back online on Sunday, following a shutdown when a federal law went into effect requiring a sale or ban.The New York Times reports that TikTok has been revived in the United States on Sunday, following President-elect Donald J. Trump’s announcement that he would issue an executive order to delay a federal ban of the app.

The sudden change came after major app stores removed TikTok and it stopped functioning for U.S. users as a federal law went into effect on Sunday. However, the company has stated that it is working with its service providers to restore service.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated that he would issue an executive order on Monday to extend the time before the law’s restrictions take effect, in order to negotiate a deal to protect national security. The ban was initially put in place due to concerns that the Chinese government could use the app to gather information or spread propaganda.

The law requires app stores and cloud computing providers to stop distributing or hosting TikTok unless it is sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Failure to comply could result in significant financial penalties. Mr. Trump’s order would also provide immunity for companies that helped keep TikTok from going dark before the order was issued.

This latest development marks a new phase in the ongoing battle over the future of TikTok, which has become a dominant force in social media, popular culture, and the livelihoods of millions of influencers and small businesses.
