When the “wall of receipts” was first posted on Feb. 16, it listed all the contracts with their claimed dollar savings. However, it has been discovered that in many cases, the actual savings are much smaller than what the team claims. In fact, as of March 13, 40% of the contracts listed show a savings value of $0, meaning no savings at all.
This constant shifting of contracts reflects the erratic approach of the Department of Government Efficiency over the past month. Federal employees have been fired and then called back to work, programs have been halted and then reinstated, federal buildings have been put up for sale and then retracted, and sweeping claims have been made and then refuted.
While Mr. Musk has acknowledged that mistakes may be made, he has also stated that they will be quickly corrected. However, experts in federal contracts, grant programs, the government workforce, data systems, and federal spending believe that these are not just errors of oversight, but rather signs of indifference towards the fundamental workings of government.
