Live Updates: Zelensky Insists That U.S. Talks With Russia Include Ukraine

Concern that President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia might sideline Ukraine in discussions to end the war also appeared to bubble up at a NATO meeting in Brussels.According to a recent report from The New York Times, the current time in Kyiv, Ukraine is 7:00 p.m. on February 13. In Moscow, the time is 8:00 p.m. on the same day. The report also states that President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is insisting that any talks between the United States and Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine must include Ukraine. This comes after concerns that President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia may sideline Ukraine in discussions to end the war. At a NATO meeting in Brussels, European leaders rushed to respond to President Trump’s moves to broker peace directly with President Putin, asserting their right to be at the negotiating table and arguing against conceding critical bargaining chips like territorial borders and NATO membership. President Zelensky emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s involvement in any agreements, stating that as a sovereign country, they cannot accept any deals without their participation. European leaders also stressed the need for their involvement in negotiations, as they will have to live with the consequences of any deal. The report also mentions Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and their efforts to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. However, Ukraine has been pushing to accelerate their application since the start of the war. British Defense Secretary John Healey also reminded that Russia remains a threat beyond Ukraine and it is the job of NATO defense ministers to ensure the best outcome for security.
