Live Updates: Meta to End Fact-Checking Program in Shift Ahead of Trump Term

The social networking giant will stop using third-party fact-checkers on Facebook, Threads and Instagram and instead rely on users to add notes to posts. It is likely to please President-elect Trump and his allies. The New York Times reports that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, will be ending its fact-checking program in a shift ahead of the Trump term. Instead of using third-party fact-checkers, the company will rely on users to add notes to posts that may contain false or misleading information. This move is likely to please President-elect Trump and his allies.

According to the report, Meta’s decision is a sign of how the company is repositioning itself for the Trump presidency in the weeks before it begins. The company’s new global policy chief, Joel Kaplan, stated that they want to “undo the mission creep” that has made their rules too restrictive and prone to over-enforcement.

In a video, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that the new protocol, which will begin in the United States in the coming months, is similar to the one used by X, called Community Notes. He also acknowledged that there will be more “bad stuff” on the platform as a result of this decision, but it is a trade-off they are willing to make.

The report also mentions that Meta executives gave advance notice to Trump officials about the change in policy, and the announcement coincided with Kaplan’s appearance on “Fox & Friends,” a popular show among conservatives. During the show, Kaplan stated that there was “too much political bias” in the fact-checking program.

Since Trump’s victory in November, Meta has been working to curry favor with the president-elect. This move to end the fact-checking program is just one of the company’s efforts to align itself with the incoming administration.
