Justin Trudeau to Resign as Canada’s Prime Minister

He will remain in both roles until a replacement is chosen.According to The New York Times, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he would be stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party. He will continue to hold both positions until a replacement is chosen.

Trudeau, who has been in power for almost a decade and was once seen as a progressive icon, made the decision in response to a dissatisfied electorate and political turmoil. This comes at a time of economic uncertainty and political division, with the incoming Trump administration threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian imports.

In a press conference outside his residence in Ottawa, Trudeau stated that he had suspended Parliament until March 24 and would remain as Liberal Party leader and prime minister until a new leader is elected through a nationwide party election. He explained that stepping down would help ease tensions and allow for a “reset.”

At 53 years old, Trudeau is the latest leader in the Western world to be ousted by anti-incumbency sentiment, anti-immigration sentiment, and frustration over the effects of the pandemic. While inflation in Canada has decreased to below 2%, unemployment remains high at over 6%.

The next general election is scheduled for October, a timeline that Trudeau referenced in his announcement. He stated, “It has become clear to me that with the internal conflicts, I cannot lead the Liberal Party into the next election.”
