JD Vance Pioneered ‘New Right’ Economics. Trump May Not Embrace It.

The vice-presidential nominee favors economic policies that help advance a socially conservative vision of American society — and that sometimes clash with Trump’s own plans.According to The New York Times, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, has a unique approach to economic policy that aligns with his socially conservative beliefs. This approach sometimes conflicts with President Trump’s own plans.

Vance’s economic views have evolved to reflect his strong commitment to social conservative causes and his frustration with the influence of large corporations on American society and politics. He has been a vocal advocate for policies that support families, such as tax breaks for having children, even if they go against traditional conservative beliefs about government intervention in the market.

Vance also supports measures to limit the power of big businesses, particularly in the tech industry, which he and his allies believe have silenced conservative voices and harmed workers and children. This includes advocating for stricter antitrust enforcement and even some corporate tax increases.

However, those who know Vance well say that his primary focus is on advancing his socially conservative vision, and his economic policies are a means to that end. Michael R. Strain, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute, says that Vance’s economic policies are in service of a broader social vision, where people can earn a middle-class wage without a college degree, and where their children are protected from the influence of big businesses.

Since taking office in 2023, Vance has supported raising the minimum wage for authorized workers, questioned the benefits of corporate tax cuts, and even expressed admiration for some of the economic stances of liberal Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren. He has also praised Lina Khan, the Federal Trade Commission chair who has been aggressive in her antitrust agenda, as one of the few Biden administration officials doing a “pretty good job.”

Overall, Vance’s economic policies reflect his commitment to advancing a socially conservative vision for American society, even if they go against traditional conservative beliefs.
