In peak vacation season, many of the continent’s most desirable getaways are becoming places to get away from.The New York Times reports that not so long ago, families would come to the shore in Montgat, Spain, just outside Barcelona, to build sand castles, play paddle games, and relax on the broad band of sand that was the epitome of a European summer vacation. However, in some places now, there is barely enough space to lay down a towel.
Sofia Mella, 19, pointed out that the area used to be all sand, but now it has been eroded by climate change. This phenomenon is turning Europe’s summer paradise into a distant memory. Countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, and France are experiencing sand-devouring storms, rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, deadly floods, and devastating wildfires, making once desirable vacation spots unbearable.
As temperatures continue to rise, experts and officials warn that the next heat wave will come soon, putting vulnerable locals at risk and causing tourists to question their decision to visit. Even activists who have been fighting against overtourism in cities like Barcelona see no silver lining in these extreme conditions. Daniel Pardo Rivacoba, a member of a group fighting overtourism and its contribution to climate change, described the scorching sun as a common enemy that affects both tourists and locals.
Last year, Mr. Pardo Rivacoba’s group gained attention by organizing demonstrations against overtourism, including spraying tourists with water guns. However, this year, the heat was so intense that they had to use the water guns on themselves. The situation has become so dire that even locals are feeling the effects and are joining the fight against overtourism.
As we continue to face the consequences of climate change, it is clear that the traditional hot spots and popular vacation destinations are no longer as desirable. The extreme conditions are not only affecting the environment but also the well-being of both tourists and locals.
