Israel’s Military Pounds Gaza as Pressure Mounts for Cease-fire

Gaza’s health ministry said that 88 people had been killed over the past day. Israeli and Hamas officials have been holding indirect cease-fire talks via mediators in Qatar.According to The New York Times, the Gaza health ministry has reported that 88 people were killed in Israeli strikes over the past day. The strikes come as Israeli and Hamas officials continue indirect cease-fire talks through mediators in Qatar. The Israeli military has claimed to have hit over 100 targets in the Gaza Strip, including sites from which militants had fired projectiles towards Israel. The military has stated that measures were taken to avoid harming civilians, but these claims cannot be independently verified. The Gaza Civil Defense has reported responding to multiple airstrikes on family homes, resulting in casualties. Pressure has been mounting for a cease-fire agreement to be reached before President-elect Donald J. Trump takes office on Jan. 20, with both sides sending delegations to Doha, Qatar to meet with mediators. The Israeli delegation has remained in Doha over the weekend, with slow progress being made towards a limited deal that would see a temporary halt in fighting and the release of some hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
