Iran Sent Ballistic Missiles to Russia, U.S. and European Officials Say

U.S. and European countries had warned of sanctions if Iran provided weapons that could be used against Ukraine. President Biden’s lame-duck status could hamper a response.According to The New York Times, the United States and European countries had issued warnings of sanctions against Iran if it provided weapons that could be used against Ukraine. However, President Biden’s lame-duck status may hinder a swift response.

Despite these warnings, U.S. and European officials have confirmed that Iran has sent several hundred short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. This move is expected to aid Russia in its efforts to destroy Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated now involves 4,000 bombs per month across the country.

The delivery of these missiles was reported by The Wall Street Journal, but Iran has denied any involvement in providing weapons to Russia. In a statement released by its permanent mission to the United Nations, Iran maintained its stance of not engaging in actions that lead to increased human casualties and destruction of infrastructure in the conflict.

The Group of 7 nations had previously warned in March that they would impose coordinated sanctions on Iran if it carried out the missile transfer, a warning that was reiterated at a NATO summit meeting in Washington in July. The international community has called for an end to the supply of weapons to the parties involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
