Inside South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s Life in Jail

President Yoon Suk Yeol, a former prosecutor, used to put people in jail. Now, after his formal arrest, he himself is in a cell, alone. The New York Times reports that former prosecutor and current South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was known for putting people in jail, is now facing his own imprisonment after being formally arrested on insurrection charges. Once living in a luxurious hilltop mansion with personal guards, Mr. Yoon is now alone in a small jail cell, eating simple meals and sleeping on the floor. This comes after his declaration of martial law last month, which led to his impeachment and subsequent criminal investigation. Mr. Yoon’s status has changed from a temporary detainee to a criminal suspect, and he is expected to be indicted within the next 18 days. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. This downfall from a powerful head of state to an accused criminal is a symbolic representation of Mr. Yoon’s dramatic fall from grace. He is the first South Korean to face insurrection charges since former military dictator Chun Doo-hwan in the 1990s.
