‘I’m Here! Can You Hear Me?’: One Family’s Story of Death in Gaza

The Abu Teirs thought the Israel-Hamas cease-fire might mean they could start to rebuild their lives. But a new round of Israeli airstrikes dashed those dreams.According to The New York Times, the Abu Teir family had hoped that the recent cease-fire between Israel and Hamas would allow them to rebuild their lives. However, their hopes were dashed when a new round of Israeli airstrikes began on March 18, shattering the two-month-old truce.

For a brief period of time, Huda Abu Teir and her family were able to return to their home in Abasan al-Kabira, in southeastern Gaza, after being displaced multiple times during the 15-month-long war. Huda, who had dreams of becoming a nurse, even threw a pizza party for her cousins to celebrate their return.

But just as they were starting to feel a sense of normalcy, the airstrikes resumed. Huda’s brother Abdullah heard the first explosion and asked his father what it was. Before they could even process the answer, another blast shook their home.

Huda’s uncle, Nour, who taught technology, had promised to help her study for her high school exams the next evening. But instead, they were forced to flee once again, leaving behind their dreams of a peaceful future. The Abu Teir family’s story is just one of many in Gaza, where the cycle of violence and displacement continues to disrupt and destroy lives.
