How Trump’s Greenland Plan Could Hit Ozempic, Legos and Hearing Aids

Putting tariffs on Denmark unless it cedes the island of Greenland could hurt access to a few key products, including popular medicines. The New York Times reports that President-elect Donald J. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark if it does not allow Greenland to become part of the United States. This move could potentially harm access to certain key products, including popular medicines.

Denmark, a small trading partner of the United States, sent over $11 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2023, while the U.S. sent over $5 billion in goods to Denmark. However, despite its small size, Denmark is home to some products that are highly valued in America, such as packaged medicines, insulin, vaccines, and antibiotics. These products make up roughly half of Denmark’s recent exports to the U.S.

This is largely due to the presence of Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company that produces popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The company is a major contributor to the Danish economy and has been responsible for half of the country’s private sector job growth and all of its economic growth. It is also increasing its production in the U.S. to meet the high demand for its products.

While Novo Nordisk has not publicly disclosed how much of its products are exported to the U.S., it is known that the company produces drugs in both Denmark and the U.S. for the American market. A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk stated that they are closely monitoring the situation but will not comment on speculation.

If the U.S. were to impose heavy tariffs on Denmark, it could potentially lead to an increase in the cost of these popular medicines. This could have a negative impact on both American consumers and the Danish economy.
