How Afghan Militias, Unleashed by the U.S., Proved Worse Than the Taliban

Trump blamed Biden. Biden blamed the Afghan military. Our investigation found that the U.S. unwittingly laid the groundwork for the Taliban’s victory long ago.According to a report from The New York Times, an American officer in Afghanistan warned that the Taliban were slowly encroaching on once secure land, after four of his men were killed. He urgently asked a crowd of 150 Afghan elders for volunteers to fight back.

The people of Kunduz Province were largely supportive of the Americans and opposed to the Taliban, but recruiting police officers was proving to be a slow process. In the summer of 2009, local officials and the American officer, a lieutenant colonel from the Georgia National Guard, decided to take a risky approach: hiring private militias.

However, this idea was met with discontent from the crowd. One old man stood up and expressed his concerns, saying, “We have seen this before. The militias will become a bigger problem than the Taliban.”

Despite the grumbling, a former warlord named Mohammad Omar stood up and declared that he would fight the Taliban. This seemingly unremarkable moment in Kunduz had a significant impact on the war, according to people in the province.

However, this gathering is not mentioned in any official history of the war, and it seems that Washington has never truly understood the consequences of this decision.
