A group of missionaries who surf have expanded to a remote part of Costa Rica, where people come from afar looking for the “perfect wave.” And maybe a little Jesus?According to The New York Times, Chandler Brownlee was standing on a cluster of rocks on a secluded Costa Rican beach, Bible in hand, admiring one of the world’s most sought-after surfing waves. But he wasn’t just there for the perfect wave; he was on a mission to spread the word of Jesus Christ to fellow surfers.
Despite his seemingly contradictory identities as a former Baptist minister and a hardcore surfer with tattoos, Brownlee, 52, is a senior member of the Christian Surfers organization, a group of missionaries who share a love for surfing.
As the sun began to set and other surfers headed back to shore, Brownlee noticed three sunburned Canadians hanging out in their beat-up R.V., passing around a joint. He approached them and struck up a conversation, hoping to share his faith with them.
Brownlee, who was born and raised in Florida, is not only a real estate agent and avid wildlife conservationist, but also a father of three daughters. But his passion for surfing and spreading the message of Christianity has led him to become a dedicated member of the Christian Surfers organization.
As he walked away from the beach that evening, Brownlee reflected on the unique combination of his two identities and how they have brought him to this moment, sharing his faith with fellow surfers in a beautiful and unexpected setting.
