Thousands of Palestinians had gathered to try to get aid from U.N. trucks entering the territory.According to The New York Times, a large group of Palestinians had gathered near a crossing from Israel to the Gaza Strip on Sunday in an attempt to receive aid from United Nations trucks entering the territory. However, Israeli forces opened fire on the crowd, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, according to the Gaza health ministry and health workers.
This incident is just one in a series of deadly shootings that have occurred as a result of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The latest attack took place near the Zikim crossing, and more than 60 people were killed while seeking aid, according to the health ministry and Mohammad Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society’s field hospital in northern Gaza was overwhelmed with gunshot victims from the incident near Zikim. According to Nebal Farsakh, a spokeswoman for the Red Crescent, the hospital received two fatalities and over 100 wounded individuals.
The Israeli military stated that they fired “warning shots” after thousands of Gazans gathered in the area. They claimed that they opened fire to protect themselves from an immediate threat, but did not specify what that threat was.
The military also disputed the reported number of casualties, stating that it did not align with their initial review. However, they did not provide an alternative toll and stated that they were still investigating the incident.
