Senator Rosen stated, “I am not afraid to embrace a good idea, wherever it comes from.”
This undercurrent of Democratic support for elements of the Republican tax agenda highlights the political appeal of some of Trump’s campaign promises, even if they have been criticized by tax experts. It also suggests that temporary measures in the bill, such as exempting tips and overtime pay from income tax, could potentially become permanent features of the tax code.
Furthermore, this explains why Trump and Republicans chose to combine their policy agenda into one large bill. By including popular tax cuts, such as an extension of current tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year, with less favorable measures like cuts to Medicaid, Republicans can argue that anyone who opposes the bill is essentially voting for a tax increase.
