C.E.O.s, and President Trump, Want Workers Back in the Office

Amazon, JPMorgan and others have been telling their employees that remote work is over. Now federal employees have been ordered to come to work in person, too.The New York Times reports that companies like Amazon, JPMorgan, and AT&T are requiring their employees to return to in-person work five days a week this year. This trend is not limited to the private sector, as President Trump recently signed an executive order requiring federal workers to also return to the office. This move comes five years after the start of the pandemic, during which remote work became the norm for many employees.

Despite initial plans to return to the office being repeatedly shelved, there has been a recent surge in calls to end remote work and return to in-person work. This has been met with enthusiasm from some chief executives who have long been eager to ditch remote work. Even in popular culture, the office is making a comeback, with shows like “Babygirl” and “Severance” portraying the corporate world and newsletters declaring remote work “out.”

Some workers, who previously preferred remote work, are now eager to return to the office. For example, marketing manager Ellen Harwick used to want to work remotely forever, but after working remotely in Portugal for two weeks, she began to crave office chatter. This shift in attitude is reflected in the increasing number of workers voluntarily returning to in-person work.

Overall, the push to end remote work and return to the office is gaining momentum, with companies and federal agencies alike implementing policies to require employees to come back in person.
