The cryptocurrency industry is home to many legitimate projects and innovations, but it is also plagued by fraudulent schemes. One such scam, involving a cryptocurrency project called Omegapro, has reportedly defrauded hundreds of clients out of €3 billion. The project used popular football players as promoters, including Kaká, Luis Figo, Iker Casillas, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Hierro, Ronaldinho, and Carles Puyol. These players either endorsed Omegapro at promotional events or on social media platforms. The involvement of these well-known football stars was a major factor in attracting unsuspecting investors. One victim, Dolores, lost her life savings of €18,000 and stated that she trusted the project because of the players’ involvement and the company’s logo being projected on a skyscraper in Dubai. Three of Omegapro’s main executives are already in jail, and two others are still at large. The victims’ lawyer has promised to bring all the football players who endorsed the scheme before the judge. The fraud took place in 2022 and affected investors from all over the world. It is worth noting that the Spanish Securities Market Commission had previously flagged Omegapro as a non-transparent financial business. This is not the first time that Ronaldinho, one of the football stars involved, has been linked to a suspicious crypto scheme. Last summer, he was investigated for his alleged participation in a scam called “18kRonaldinho,” which promised unrealistically high returns to investors. Ronaldinho claimed that his role was limited to promotional activities and that his name and image were used without his consent. However, the project was later exposed as a Ponzi scheme.
