Amazon Union Dissident Wins Election as President

The Amazon Labor Union has been divided over strategy and governance issues after winning a representation vote at a Staten Island warehouse in 2022.The New York Times reports that the Amazon Labor Union, which won a representation vote at a Staten Island warehouse in 2022, has been facing division over strategy and governance issues. In a recent election, a dissident group took control of the union, which is the only one in the country that represents Amazon warehouse workers. The group, led by Connor Spence, defeated the union’s current recording secretary and another candidate in an election that saw approximately 250 votes out of thousands of workers at the warehouse.

The dissident group, known as the A.L.U. Democratic Reform Caucus, had previously brought a lawsuit to force leadership elections within the union. In January, a settlement was reached that paved the way for this month’s election, which was monitored by a court-approved monitor. The group argued that the union’s current leadership, including founding president Christian Smalls, had too much power and were not accountable to the members. However, Mr. Smalls rejected these claims.

In addition to taking over the presidency, Mr. Spence’s group also claimed victory for the union’s three other officer positions. In a statement, they expressed relief that they can now focus on bringing Amazon to the negotiating table after a long fight to reform the union. The company has been contesting the outcome of the representation vote and has yet to negotiate a contract with the union. Mr. Smalls, who chose not to run for re-election, confirmed the election results announced by Mr. Spence’s group.
