One of the suspects, John Woeltz, was released after spending two months in prison, while the other, William Duplessie, remains in custody. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to reports from Fox News, the defense attorneys claim that the alleged torture was a “fraternity-like rite of passage.” Woeltz’s lawyer, Wayne Gosnell, stated in a previous hearing that the victim was being hazed as a pledge. The alleged torturer, who is also involved in cryptocurrency trading, refused to answer questions about the accusations against him and how he felt about being released from custody.
As a condition of his release, Woeltz must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and can only leave his home for specific reasons, such as doctor’s appointments or meetings with lawyers. Prosecutors revealed in court that the two suspects kidnapped the victim and tortured him for over three weeks, taking his phone and passport. They also had a plan to steal his cryptocurrency, according to a criminal complaint.
The victim was subjected to physical beatings, electric shocks, and threats with a firearm, as well as being dragged to the top of a flight of stairs and threatened with death. The authorities also stated that the suspects threatened the victim’s family in Italy and humiliated him by having people urinate on him.
