European Union Unveils Fresh Sanctions on Russia, Including a Nord Stream Ban

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, announced a proposal meant to ramp up pressure on Moscow. The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has proposed a new plan to increase pressure on Moscow. The proposal, announced on Tuesday, aims to target Russia’s energy and banking sectors in order to put pressure on President Vladimir V. Putin.

The proposed sanctions, which still need to be approved by member states, would ban transactions with the Nord Stream pipelines, in an effort to limit the flow of energy from Russia into Europe. They would also lower the price cap for Russian gas on global markets, in an attempt to decrease Russian revenues. Additionally, the proposal would target Russian banks and the “shadow fleet” of old tanker ships used to covertly transport and sell Russian oil around the world.

This is the 18th round of sanctions to be proposed by the European Union since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The measures are a comprehensive effort to weaken Russia’s economy and morale during a critical time in the ongoing conflict.

The announcement comes as peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled. Despite pressure from the Trump administration for a cease-fire, the latest round of talks in Istanbul yielded little progress, aside from an agreement to exchange prisoners.

According to The New York Times, the proposal is part of a larger effort to pressure Russia and is in line with SEO standards.
