The drastic, sudden pullback in federal dollars is collapsing opportunities for many who’ve spent years in public service.The New York Times reports that the sudden and severe reduction in federal funding is severely limiting opportunities for many individuals who have dedicated years to public service. After being let go from his position at the Food and Drug Administration in February, Matt Minich, like many other scientists, began searching for a job at a university. However, the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he had accepted a position, lost its federal grant funding just 45 minutes after he was hired. This, along with the mass layoffs of probationary workers at the beginning of President Trump’s second administration, has caused chaos and uncertainty for former civil servants. The Department of Government Efficiency, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, has been rapidly cutting staff, freezing spending, and terminating government contracts. As a result, there are now even fewer opportunities available in academia, consulting, and direct services for former federal employees. Additionally, some states that were previously hiring have also pulled back, and private contractors, typically seen as a landing place for former government workers, are also reducing their workforce. The situation is expected to worsen as more layoffs are announced and workers on administrative leave see their time run out. Recently, over 700 people attended a resource fair in Arlington, Virginia, seeking free consultation, professional headshots, and workshops in hopes of finding new job opportunities.
