The center was set up to prevent Hamas from obtaining food, but desperate Palestinians rushed to secure even just one box of food after three months without aid. The Israeli government promised an orderly system to improve on the United Nations’ efforts, but chaos ensued. On Saturday night, Mohammed Abdulal, 30, was among the thousands of people pushing their way towards the aid site when he was shot in the face. The aid effort, organized by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and endorsed by the United States, was meant to provide aid to Palestinians while keeping it out of the hands of Hamas. However, the rollout of the program has faced numerous challenges and has resulted in tragic consequences.
