In Gaza’s Emaciated Children, a Hunger Crisis Is Laid Bare

Aid began to trickle into the territory this week. But there is never enough.According to The New York Times, the dire situation in Gaza can be seen in the emaciated body of a 6-year-old girl, with her protruding ribs and twig-like arms. The weight loss is not limited to her, as many others in the area have also lost pounds due to the 80-day blockade imposed by Israel. The blockade was an attempt to pressure Hamas into releasing Israeli hostages, but it has only worsened the already dire situation in Gaza.

Last week, Israel allowed a small amount of aid to enter Gaza, which enabled some bakeries to reopen. However, this has done little to alleviate the widespread hunger and suffering in the territory. The limited amount of food being distributed is not enough to meet the enormous needs of the people, and Gaza is on the brink of famine.

In the northern part of Gaza, which is cut off from the rest of the territory by Israeli troops, hundreds of thousands of people are forced to wait for hours for food from charity kitchens, which often runs out too soon. They also have to resort to digging boreholes for water, even though it may be unsanitary. The situation is dire, and there is never enough food to go around.

Six-year-old Najwa Hussein Hajjaj has lost 42% of her body weight in the last two months, going from 34 pounds to 21 pounds. She suffers from an esophagus condition and requires special meals, but her family can barely find any food at all. Doctors have diagnosed her with severe malnutrition.

The lack of fuel is also a major issue in Gaza, as it is needed for hospital generators, cars, and cooking stoves. Families have resorted to burning wood or even trash to cook their meals. In Gaza City, Bashir Sami Ashour’s family was seen cooking soup over an open fire.

The situation in Gaza is dire, and the people are suffering. Despite the recent allowance of aid, it is not enough to meet the enormous needs of the people. The blockade has caused widespread hunger and suffering, and the people of Gaza are in desperate need of help.
