As President Trump blurs the lines between politics and business — and threatens steep tariffs on trade partners — governments feel compelled to favor Trump-related projects.According to a recent report from The New York Times, officials in Vietnam’s top leader’s home province have been going door to door, pressuring residents to sign letters agreeing to the Trump Organization’s plans for a new golf community. Despite his reservations, Le Van Truong, a 54-year-old resident, signed the letter because he felt he had no other choice.
The Trump Organization’s plans for a $1.5 billion golf complex outside of Hanoi and a skyscraper in Ho Chi Minh City are the first projects the Trump family has undertaken in Vietnam. This global business venture, unprecedented for a sitting American president, is not only making the Trumps richer, but also distorting how countries interact with the United States.
In order to expedite the Trump development, Vietnam has disregarded its own laws and granted concessions that are more generous than what even well-connected locals receive. In a letter obtained by The New York Times, Vietnamese officials explicitly stated that the project required special support from the top ranks of the government because it was “receiving special attention from the Trump administration and President Donald Trump personally.”
This development has also been pushed forward in the midst of high-stakes diplomacy, as Vietnam faces pressure to strike a trade deal with the United States to avoid steep tariffs on their exports. The Trump Organization’s projects in Vietnam have raised concerns about conflicts of interest and the potential for the president to use his power for personal gain.
