Jamieson Greer, the United States trade representative, and other Trump administration officials said the United States was ready to negotiate but that would not stop stiff tariffs from taking effect.According to The New York Times, the Trump administration has indicated its willingness to negotiate with countries affected by the recent tariffs. The United States has received requests from 70 governments to roll back the tariffs and officials will begin talks with Japan, South Korea, and other nations. However, President Trump and his advisors have made it clear that these requests will not prevent the implementation of the next round of tariffs, including a 50 percent duty on Chinese goods. This means that tariffs on Chinese goods will now be at least 104 percent. Despite acknowledging that the tariffs have caused some controversy, President Trump defended the policy, stating that the US is seeing a significant increase in revenue. He also mentioned that many countries are approaching the US to negotiate deals. Earlier in the day, President Trump had a positive call with South Korea’s acting president, Han Duck-soo, regarding trade and tariffs. He also expressed hope that a trade war with China could be avoided, stating that China is also interested in making a deal. However, he added that they have not yet reached out to start negotiations.
