CoinDesk reports that every few decades, a new technology emerges that has the potential to change everything. In the 1980s, it was the personal computer, followed by the internet in the 1990s and the smartphone in the 2000s. Now, as AI agents gain momentum and excitement, the tech world is not questioning whether they will reshape our lives, but rather how soon.
However, despite the hype, the promise of decentralized agents has yet to be fulfilled. Many so-called agents today are simply glorified chatbots or copilots, lacking true autonomy and the ability to handle complex tasks. This raises the question of what is holding back this revolution and how can we move from theory to reality?
Currently, there are a few AI agents in the market, such as Truth Terminal and Freysa, that have gained attention for their clever and engaging nature. However, these are not truly decentralized agents. They are semi-scripted bots that cannot make autonomous decisions or execute tasks dynamically and at scale.
Even more serious players in the AI-blockchain space have struggled to deliver on the promise of truly decentralized agents. This is because traditional blockchains are not designed to process AI, leading to shortcuts being taken. Some projects focus on verification, ensuring the credibility of AI outputs, but fail to provide meaningful utility once those outputs are brought on-chain. Others prioritize execution but do not decentralize the AI inference process, often operating without validators or consensus mechanisms for AI outputs.
The main challenge in integrating AI with blockchain is that the current internet is designed for human users, not AI. This is especially true for Web3, where blockchain infrastructure is dragged to the front-end in the form of clunky user interfaces and manual cross-chain coordination requests. This chaotic data structure and UI pattern is not conducive to AI agents, and a complete overhaul of the infrastructure is needed for decentralized agents to become a reality.
In conclusion, for decentralized agents to truly take off, the way AI and blockchain systems interact needs to be reimagined. This will require a fundamental shift in the infrastructure and a focus on creating a seamless integration between the two technologies. Only then can we see the full potential of decentralized agents and their impact on our lives.
