Led by Believers in the City’s Future, Detroit Is on the Rebound

Once the largest city in the U.S. to declare bankruptcy, this Midwestern metropolis is now thriving. But some obstacles still remain. The New York Times reports that Detroit, once the largest city in the U.S. to declare bankruptcy, is now thriving. Despite this progress, there are still obstacles to overcome. Mayor Mike Duggan recently gave a tour of the city, showcasing new developments such as a 600-room JW Marriott hotel and a mile-long stretch of riverfront land being transformed into a green recreation area. However, reminders of Detroit’s troubled past still remain, such as a crumbling, boarded-up building that was once a hospital. The city is also looking towards the future, with plans for a University of Michigan research and innovation center. Mayor Duggan expressed his excitement about the renewed sense of pride among Detroiters. The tour ended at a small park that was the site of a violent uprising in 1967, which marked the start of the city’s decline.
