The new wage offer, proposed by the United States Maritime Alliance, includes a 62 percent increase over the course of a new six-year contract. While this is lower than the union’s initial request, it is a significant increase from the alliance’s previous offer. The International Longshoremen’s Association, representing 45,000 members, has agreed to return to work with the current contract extended until January 15. Both the union and the alliance have issued statements confirming the agreement.

The White House played a role in pressuring both sides to reach a deal and end the strike, which is the first full-scale walkout for the union since 1977. The wage increase is seen as a victory for the International Longshoremen’s Association and its president, Harold J. Daggett, who has been leading the union since 2011.

When asked about the tentative deal, President Biden expressed optimism, saying, “We’ve been working hard on it. With the grace of God, it’s going to hold.” This agreement is a positive development for the economy and the thousands of workers who rely on the ports for their livelihoods.
